Yeah because people don't search before they post new ones.

Yeap THATS for sure, I've caught so many people starting new threads for no reason I wish I was mod so I could close them myself

Locked threads aren't deleted threads. Half of that 989 comes from the old extension of OU that has since become it's own site. Obviously, when that left, so did the section.

But shouldn't the ones that are totally pointless like those that already had a topic (I'm guilty too) be deleted?

We only delete if it's redundantly posted, or spam. We leave other threads locked to hopefully serve as a reminder that there is an existing thread.
