^What he said about the photos.

Crews were busy today placing more track and supports. They've now entered into the final trench and there's a bunch of supports and track on-site waiting to go in tomorrow. The station was getting a little work and finally the work walls for the new tour center have been taken down.

Anyone remember the old leaked pics that showed themeing on the supports for the area that passed over the EOA path? If you look at this picture is shows the same supports as the picture did (A support on the right that doesn't touch the ride, and the triple supports on the left)

I noticed that too, the only thing I thought it could be used for is supporting an inversion below it in the trench. But I don't think that is part of the layout... That's going to be some very cool theming to warrant a support like that. I would love to see a closer picture of that support.

From RollermanDan at Florida Thrills:

They've started prep work for footers with gravel going down. Just like in the other trenches. Next comes rebar...then footers...then finish track. I believe the second trench might be the last thing completed.

I really wanted to go out there today and see the clearance issue with the skyride. The pictures don't really give you a clear understanding of elevations. I probably will not be returning to the park until February 18 for the behind the scenes construction tour led by Mark Rose. By then track, weather permitting, should be done and we will be able to see new angles and have a better understanding of the total experience.

Judging from my No Limits recreation (which by the way is the exact same length of track as the real one ) One train will go through that final s-bend at the same time as one going under it down the drop. It doesn't really get close but they cross paths.

Busch Gardens Blog posted an insider look at Cheetah Run.

Building on Busch Gardens’ unrivaled ability to combine thrills with immersive animal encounters, Cheetah Run will set a new standard for bringing nature and humans together in a really unique way.

Located in the area that formerly housed the Budweiser Clydesdales, this expansive new habitat will give you the opportunity to get closer to cheetahs than ever before with elevated, glass-paneled viewing areas.

That's right. You -- face to face with a majestic cheetah.

Even more exciting will be the chance to witness the world’s fastest land animal in action. Busch Gardens’ trainers will conduct daily sprints with the cheetahs for an awesome opportunity to see one of nature’s true wonders in full form!
You can your family can also explore interactive touch screens to learn even more about these big cats and SeaWorld Parks' conservation work on their behalf.

Can’t wait to see the cheetahs?
We hear you! So from now until the opening of Cheetah Run, you can see them on the Endangered Species Safari. (http://www.buschgardens.com/bgt/Explore/UpClose.aspx?id=740#gotodetail&utm_source=BGTBlog&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=CheetahRunEndangeredTour)

Five cheetahs recently arrived at the park in accordance with the international cheetah Species Survival Plan. Steelman, a 12-year-old male, Ngoma, a 10-year-old female, and littermates Jagati, Iraja and Juno – all born in October 2009 – will be part of Cheetah Run.
The 45-minute Endangered Species Safari (http://www.buschgardens.com/bgt/Explore/UpClose.aspx?id=740#gotodetail&utm_source=BGTBlog&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=CheetahRunEndangeredTour) also includes up-close encounters with giraffes, zebra and rhinos on the 65-acre Serengeti Plain. The experience is $39.95 per person, plus tax, and park admission is required, but not included.

This is one of the reasons why I love Manta so much.

Can I just say, a big thank you to all of those who have provided updates of the construction process so far. This looks like a brilliant new development for Busch Gardens. It looks as though it compliments the other attractions really well and also looks fantastic in an already beautiful park. Hope this thing rides well in reality!

I doubt this ride, or the Cheetah habitat, will disapoint you.

Look at Rip Ride and Rockit horrible name and lots of problems...
If our only complaint is the simplistic name we all good in my book, but I admit I was really diggin Cheetaka as the name of the coaster.

Rockit is definetely much more pleasing to say than Cheetah Hunt. It just sounds awkward to say just Cheetah or Hunt. :bang:

What we've learned from today:

The cheetah pens are near completion and that there's 7 stalls for 14 cheetahs (12 here).
Theming will be incredible. We learned that there will be a section called the "Crossroads" where Morocco, Egypt and Edge of Africa meet. Villagers of the Crossroads celebrate the spirit of the Cheetah. Cheetah Hunt's queue will connect this village to the nature of the actual roller coaster attraction through an integrated back story.
Cheetah figures at the front will resemble driftwood carvings.
Inside the station, there will be a giant 15 foot high Cheetah Rock that will resemble a cheetah. Villager's celebrate this iconic rock because when found - it resembled the shape of a cheetah. Through chiseling and carving they've managed to carve the head of the cheetah into the top of the rock - the bottom remaining in its natural state.
Mack Rides is installing their air gate systems on Cheetah Hunt.
First launch will now be 38 mph instead of 30.
The Second launch will remain at 60 mph - accelerating in under 2 seconds flat.
Third launch will now be 50 mph instead of 40.
The Canyon Section will include a run-in with a waterfall. Riders will be skimming above 18 inches of water in a serpentine-like fashion. The river will be designed to run at a fast current in the opposite direction of travel to further give the illusion of speed.
The use of trenches in the design of the roller coaster is primarily to inhibit certain aspects of the attraction to pedestrians. Cheetah Hunt was specifically designed to interact with non-riders - and the trenches enable the trains to disappear from sight; thus intensifying the experience for spectators.
Parabola hill is 60ft. tall.
Cheetah Hunt will do a pull through with the front car and ride clearances.
Trains arrive next week.
Track completion expected by end of next week. 13 pieces remaining to be installed. Installation from this point forward will start on the Windcatcher Tower and finish at the crown of the "skyride hill".
May 27th opening date.

Track completion expected by end of next week. 13 pieces remaining to be installed. Installation from this point forward will start on the Windcatcher Tower and finish at the crown of the "skyride hill".

May 27th opening date.

I also saw a video from BGTNation that states the following other facts:

The current entrance path will be divided into 4 paths: the Skyride entrance, the Skyride exit, the Cheetah Hunt entrance, and the Cheetah Hunt quick queue.

As you come down the stairs, you'll be able to see the monitors of your ride experience. You can purchase either a photo or video of your ride.

The gift shop will also have accessories, and cheetah-themed gifts.

A few notes about the trains,

-5 trains carrying 16 passengers each
-2 trains will load simultaneously like Sheikra
-Train depot can hold up to 6 trains but BGT only ordered 5
-Block brakes are set up to carry a maximum 1400 PPH, but expectations are 1200-1400 PPH.
-Trains will resemble those on Maverick at Cedar Point but will have a zero car themed to a Cheetah and additional themeing all down the side
-Cheetah Hunt will use the new soft OTSR's like I305 installed midway through last season.
-The zero car was originally mocked up using styrofoam
-There are 3 control booths for this coaster.

Two stories out of Busch Gardens today:

New Cheetah Hunt Construction video:

Meet the Cheetah Keeper:

http://www.buschgardenstampablog.com/sites/www.buschgardenstampablog.com/files/resize/content/tim_smith-300x209.jpg

Tim Smith is Assistant Curator at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

As assistant curator, what does your job entail here at Busch Gardens?

I work with the animal collections in both the Edge of Africa as well as the new Cheetah Run exhibit. I also perform and supervise the care and maintenance of both our animals and our staff.

What kind of background has led you to be able to work with the cheetahs?

I actually grew up working on a farm. From there I graduated high school and went on to get my degree in Biology from the State University of New York. After school, I began working in the wild animal field and I also became a bird trainer for various shows. Then I went to SeaWorld and worked there for 9 years before I finally came to Busch Gardens.

How are you training the cheetahs to be integrated into the Cheetah Run exhibit? What is the biggest thrill of working with cheetahs?

We’re doing a lot of familiarization with the cheetahs by bringing in different elements of the park, such as smells, sights, noises, etc, into their habitat and getting them comfortable with what’s going to be in the new Cheetah Run habitat. We’re also taking steps to build relationships with the different cheetahs to where they are comfortable working with us and becoming cooperative with the run exercises.

What are you looking forward to guests experiencing at Cheetah Run?

I’m looking forward to having the guests immersed in this whole new world defined by speed and agility and seeing how they react to what they learn. I want them to see and understand what the cheetah is all about - how they behave, how they interact, and especially how they run.

Can you tell us about your trip to Africa to work with cheetahs?

My visit to Africa was spent with Ann van Dyk at the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre in DeWildt which has become very successful at understanding cheetah breeding. Over 40 years they have learned much about the process by which cheetahs should be put together to encourage propagation. Ann has recently developed a new breeding facility at Shingwedzi and it is at this facility that they have produced approximately 30 cheetah cubs last year, seven of which are now here at BGT.

How is Busch Gardens involved in these cheetah conservation efforts?

At the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center there is an education program where guests are invited to participate in cheetah runs and interactions in their classroom facility. Also by educating the local people they are able reduce the number of cheetahs that are shot and killed every year, thus contributing to a decrease in wild cheetah mortality. By building relationships with organizations like Busch Gardens, the opportunity to further the goals in regards to the cheetah’s success is much more possible. Through conservation education we will be successful. The SeaWorld Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has donated $88,000 to 4 different conservation organizations since 2005 and Busch Gardens alone has donated $40,000 to White Oak Conservation in the name of cheetah research.

If any of our younger readers want to work with cheetahs in the future, what type of education or experience would they need?

The obvious response is to get a good education. But more importantly you need to pursue what you are interested in. The best start you can get is by volunteering or interning at local zoos or animal exhibits and learning as much as you can. Starting at the bottom and working your way up is often the most beneficial and rewarding experience you can work towards.

Will you be riding Cheetah Hunt when it opens?

Absolutely! I made plans to ride it from the day I heard it was coming. I will definitely be on that coaster opening day.

Yes and great video, BGT really does a great job with the web advertising.

Update: On the left side where the pond is located is where one of several water features will be. This one will be a pond with a small waterfall right next to the coaster.

Busch Gardens is excited to announce that the Cheetah Hunt trains have arrived!

The five trains were delivered to Busch Gardens late last week.

Each train is made up of four four-passenger cars, for a total of 16 guests per train. The front car features a custom nose-piece that resembles a cheetah’s face. Further theming and graphics will be applied to the cars to complete the cheetah look, and the finished cars will be unveiled at the end of March.

They definitely look a lot like smaller Kumba Trains. Between the shaped front (that is sort of resembling the Cheetah face) and the curves of the following cars and color my mind totally went right to Kumba as soon as I saw them.

Now what I am worried about, are the restraints. I don't often hear good things about Intimin restraints, and I am large guy.

From Mike T at RCProCommunity:

I wouldn't be too worried about the restraints kids. Although they look pretty typical for IntaRide they're actually prototype devices that integrate the ruggedness of the stiff restraint with the comfort of the I305 straps. The materials in the neck portion are supposedly made of a silicone material - akin to what you'd find in an artificial breast implant. Remember the attraction has to accommodate a 48 inch height requirement and in order to do so the manufacturer had to make significant adjustments to meet this threshold.

EDIT: Kraken&Manta beat me to it last page.

The ride may have a few problems. From Screamscape:

(3/2/11) The big rumor coming in from several contacts and sources over the past 24 hours is that a couple of big issues have come up with Cheetah Hunt. First of all, several people are saying that the work in “Trench 2” has hit a snag as the digging down there may be having a problem with water seeping into the trench that has to be addressed. (It’s hard to dig too deep in Florida before you hit the water table you know…)

The second and larger issue of note has to do with that “leap” over the Skyride. The big rumor going around this week is that a serious miscalculation was made here and that there is going to be clearance issues between Cheetah Hunt and the SkyRide. I attempted to get a statement about this rumor from Busch Gardens Tampa today, but as of this writing, they have not gotten back in touch with me with a comment.

Having said that, one has to wonder where the error was made. Did the surveyors make the mistake long before the construction started, or did an error come from Stengle’s layout calculations, the track fabricators or even Intamin itself? We can’t just point the finger at Intamin here and say, “Look, another Maverick” as there really are simply too many piece of the puzzle right now to know where the fault came from.

In the end, it sounds like either the coaster is going to have to be altered or the SkyRide itself. Don’t think that it would be simply to try and “shorten” the SkyRide towers however, as there is a lot more involved than that. They would have to get a new shorter cable for the ride, and then likely have to adjust the whole counter-weight system that maintains the tension on the cable at all times. If they used the same old counter-weight, it would likely put too much tension on the cable and could damage or even snap it.

Of course manufacturing new track for a higher jump over the SkyRide may not be a viable solution either if the coaster’s layout does not allow for the train to have enough velocity to achieve the higher jump at that point in the ride. In this case, they could be forced to return to the original idea, as seen in the animation, where the track simply goes under the SkyRide once again.

In the end, I’m really hoping the rumors are wrong here and that we’ll see Cheetah Hunt open as promised for Memorial Day Weekend. More as I find out…

violarum
03-02-2011, 12:38 AM
No no no why why why
This isn't happening because if that clearance is a problem, the whole segment is, too, and the whole opening date is, too.
:C

hatetofly
03-02-2011, 12:51 AM
The water table issue shouldn't be a huge issue. If there was an issue with the skyride I bet the problem came from the surveyors who took there calculations while the sky-ride was in use and the cable was lower than it is now. As far as an opening is concerned Mark said he has all the pieces he needs to complete the ride on time. He also stated he was able to have the entire ride system for the simulator building done and open in less than 90 days. IMO there is an issue since the track should of been done a few days ago but I stll think Mark Rose and company will have this open by Memorial Day. I mean remember how quickly Intamin fabricated new track for Maverick. For those who don't it delayed only 14 days.

Kraken&Manta
03-02-2011, 09:02 AM
I really can't say I believe this. It's only a calculation of height, which is extremely hard to mess up. I would think the designed the coaster's hill in accordance to the Sky Ride's towers and not the cable.

Some good news today from Screamscape:

(3/3/11) After yesterday’s big fuss over a possible miscalculation on Cheetah Hunt, I’m happy to report that I was able to get in touch with the park for a statement on the issue, which they report to be false. False as in there was no miscalculation… they have known all along that the they were going to lower the Skyride towers in that area to allow for Cheetah Hunt to jump over it. Here is the statement from the park below…
“…part of what makes Cheetah Hunt such an amazing addition is its use of an interaction with existing park elements. To make that happen, of course it has been necessary to make major changes to several park landmarks like Rhino Rally, the Clydesdale Hamlet, the Crown Colony and the Monorail Station.
Some of the more subtle changes include raising the floor in the Monorail Station, cutting back the waterfall outcropping in Rhino Rally canyon and moving some of the Serengeti Express’ train tracks. Some of the more major changes – many of which are immediately noticeable to guests in the area – that are taking place include building new guest bridges and pathways between Nairobi and Edge of Africa, building a seating terrace in front of the Crown Colony, replacing the Clydesdale Hamlet’s wooden stalls with secure “bedrooms” for the cheetahs, and, indeed, lowering certain Skyride towers near the area where the track “jumps” the cable.”

I'm coming over from Liverpool (UK) on May 8th for 10 nights and was really hoping to ride Cheetah Hunt. I know that Busch do soft openings, do any of you have any idea if i'm likely to be able to ride this when i'm there? If so any tips/hints of the best way? This could be my only visit and would be gutted to miss it!

Cheers.

I think OF summed it up perfectly. Regardless of whether or not its open still make the best of it. BGT is an amazing park and from a rollercoaster standpoint a top 10 park without Cheetah Hunt IMO. Keep this in mind though, BGT has never had soft openings for any of there coasters. And before anyone chimes in they didn't do it when Sheikra went floorless either.

And that drop looks great!

From Busch Gardens:

Construction crews worked into the evening on Monday to install the final piece of track that completes Cheetah Hunt’s epic 4,429-foot run – a record length among Busch Gardens Tampa’s coasters.

http://www.buschgardenstampablog.com/sites/www.buschgardenstampablog.com/files/resize/content/finaltrack2-300x209.jpg

The final section, which completes the “jump” over the Skyride’s cables, was bolted into place just before 9:30 p.m.

http://www.buschgardenstampablog.com/sites/www.buschgardenstampablog.com/files/resize/content/finaltrack3-300x197.jpg

Even with the completion of the track, however, the work is far from over in preparing the new mega-attraction for its May 27th grand opening.

http://www.buschgardenstampablog.com/sites/www.buschgardenstampablog.com/files/resize/content/finaltrack5-352x234.jpg

Crews will spend the next two months finishing the intricate sculpting – or “theming” – of the coasters’ surrounding architecture. Construction also continues on innovative Cheetah Run habitat, which will house more than a dozen of the highly endangered cats and offer guests unique opportunities to get up-close and witness a cheetah’s speed first-hand during daily sprints.

I was at the park today. They had some stakes by the construction walls surrounding the south side of the third trench stating "Fence" (which probably means a restricted fence).

And also, the tree in front of the cheetah holding area (once part of the Clydesdale lawn) now has a planter box around it, and some red/orange stakes have appeared mainly between the tree and the holding area (I assume this is path work).

I am sure there will still be work going on, all the major building elements look to be wrapping up, they will undoubtedly be working on the final touches right up until the opening.
The last update has the scaffolding down so thats a good sign that the area is getting ready for the ground work. They should start the finishes on the other trenches, entrance, and seating area in front of the Crown Colony soon.
I am going to try and get there mid, to end of the, week for another round of pics.
