It had been off the building for a few months. It looks great aside from the fact they removed the reference to Jim Henson. For a company that obviously understands the importance of honoring their own founder/creator, you'd think this wouldn't be a big deal for them to leave.

Aww, that makes me upset to see they have decided to remove Jim Henson's name from everything. It's like they want to let guests know they now OWN the Muppets. :(

I know, they own them and all but that is no reason to negate that Henson was the one and only true creator of them.
It just seems pretty cruel to cast his name aside like that.
Shame, shame Disney :nono:

Ehem. Anyway, this is out of control. This is a form of D-Bagery I would expect from Six flags or something. Taking someones name of of something they made is just wrong. I expect more from disney as such a high Theme Park Establishment. Shame Disney, shame. :nono:. Wait, has Jim even seen this yet?

Are you kidding me?

Jim passed away in 1990, so apparently not.
His family sold the rights to a lot though.

Yeah it was a very sudden death, complications from horrible pneumonia and strep.
Talks of the Apatow gang getting involved. hey as long as they kick it back tot he old school where it was about putting on a show and Electric Mayhem is in it and it is funny and has loads of cameos and NOOOOO 'F' words in it like all his other things... it will be a great flick.

Universal has never done anything of the sort so I don't know how you could make that comparison. I'm pretty sure even after Geisell's death it will still be SUESS LANDING.

Jeez, is this the thread for people to not realize that certain celebrities are dead? I kid, but it seems unintentionally true.

This is truly sad that they removed any mention of Jim Henson.

It was a joke, guys. ;) A bad one, I know. I'm pretty sure there is still a mention of Henson somewhere around the attraction.

Screamscape posted a follow up to this today:

http://www.screamscape.com/html/wdw_-_hollywood_studios.htm

(9/23/08) While I haven’t heard an official story yet, I was given a good theory about why Jim Henson’s name has been removed from the attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. According to this older news article from when Disney purchased the Muppets, they simply bought the Muppets characters along with Bear and the Big Blue House from The Jim Henson Company back in 2004. It’s a common mistaken believe that Disney bought the entire company, but they did not. However part of that deal also included a four-year consulting contract with the Jim Henson Co., as well as a three-year production deal to make new films or TV shows. It’s thought that The Jim Henson Company may have even requested that Disney remove and stop using the Jim Henson name in an effort to clear up some of this confusion how that the consulting deal is over that they have cut their ties with Disney.

Meanwhile, just in time for the end earlier this year, Disney launched an all new version of the Muppets.com website that also has no mention of Jim Henson’s name (that I can see at least...). Not long afterwards, Disney also announced a deal with writer Jason Segel and helmer Nick Stoller to produce the next Muppet film for them by 2010.

Clearly Disney is taking ownership of the Muppets for this all new generation. It seems this is just the start of Disney’s efforts to ramp up public awareness of the Muppets all over again for their next big marketing push, which will include a new Christmas special to be broadcast on NBC this December. It’s taken a few years for Disney to figure out how to fit the Muppets in to the mix with the rest of the Disney characters, but it seems clear now that they have a plan and it is being put into action.

So far the early efforts, including all new viral videos on YouTube have been a huge success. There are all new YouTube videos being posted by actual Muppets who have made their own channels such as Sam the Eagle posting as PatrioticEagle, Statler & Waldof posting as HeckleU247, The Swedish Chef posting as Deumnborkborkbork, Beeker posting as MeepMeepMeepow, and Gonzo posting as WeirdoWhatever.

That was my initial thought when I saw the picture. Jim Henson's kids still have a studio with his name on it. That entity bought back the rights to the Fraggles not long ago. It actually some pretty plausible since many companies do things like this to clear up any confusion.

Leave his name. It's his legacy that he left behind and Disney should get rid of it.

I think he meant leave his name on all the logos.

The problem is that none of us know the story behind the removal of Henson's name from the balloon. If his kids asked that it be removed to avoid confusion between the remaining parts of Henson's companies and the Muppets now owned by Disney - then that's one thing. If they just removed it while the relatives had no complaints - then that's a pretty poor decision on my part. The problem is that none of us know why it was done.
