10. Flying
Unicorn - Islands of Adventure
Everyone has to start somewhere,
right?
9. Dueling
Dragons (Ice) - Islands of Adventure
Choose Thy Fate. Let me
dispel any rumors. Yes, I do believe that one side is better than
the other. If you picked Ice you're in for a good ride. The Ice dragon
is the tamer dragon of the two, but it features some very cool elements.
The ride doesn't feel as wild as it's competition but it is still
a great ride. The near misses make the ride worth going on alone,
and I think one of the unsung moments of the Ice course is the cobra
roll. For some reason, I feel that it is one of the most effective
near misses and it doesn't even involve the other track.
8. Big Thunder
Mountain Railroad - Magic Kingdom
An absolute classic. I
remember going on this as a youngling, and being terrified of the
headchopper effects on the drops. That was then, this is now, and
they still get me on occasion. The ride is so very well themed, and
the feel of it is just authentic. This is a ride where as long as
it is open, I'll be riding it for nostalgia value alone.
7. Dueling
Dragons (Fire) - Islands of Adventure
The wild child of the two.
I think the Fire dragon is a little more unique because it features
2 non typical elements. The immleman loop, it's first inversion, is
a great inversion that isn't used enough. It gives you a great feeling
of weightless-ness for a second. The second is a very, very typical
thing that isn't used much on inverted coasters, and that is a simple
bunnyhill as the Ice dragon goes through it's zero-G roll. The 2 corkscrews
at the end provide good G's and make this ride one of the better inverts
out there.
6. Space
Mountain - Magic Kingdom
Another Disney classic.
Set the standard for the indoor, dark roller coaster. The ride doesn't
live up to the Coaster standards many people have, but if you're a
hardcore theme park fanatic, you'll appreciate what's so special about
Space Mountain. The classic tunnel of light is a sight that will never
leave my mind. Traveling through it can be something truly special
that if you haven't been on the ride, is worth a ride alone.
5. The Incredible
Hulk Coaster - Islands of Adventure
Widely regarded by many
as the best... but you know what? I don't think it is. Do I think
the Hulk is a good ride? Most definitely. However, I do think it is
overrated. The ride features a fantastic beginning over the Islands
of Adventure lagoon. The zero-g roll, cobra roll, and loop are all
top notch. I will say that I feel after that point, the ride is dull.
It loses speed and my interest very quickly. Hulk is worth the rush,
but is by no means #1.
4. Expedition
Everest - Disney's Animal Kingdom
Hop aboard a train for
a ride around Mount Everest. The story of the Yeti is enough to scare
away many explorers, but that's all a rumor, right? Wrong. As the
coaster progresses up and through the mountain, you are constantly
derailed by the Yeti creature. The ride features top notch theming
and great coaster. One of the most renowned parts of the ride is the
animatronic Yeti at the end of the ride. You eventually come face
to face with the creature. It is a stunning 22 feet tall.
3. Rock N'
Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith - Disney's Hollywood Studios
If you love rock music
and roller coasters, this ride is the perfect mix of awesomeness.
The ride opened in 1999 and is another fantastic indoor coaster. The
pre-show is always a treat as you see Aerosmith recording in the studio
and inviting you to their concert at the civic center. They send us
stretch limos that will get us there in a flash. They mean it. The
ride accelerates from 0-57mph in 2.8 seconds. The ride has a great
soundtrack as the tunes of Aerosmith flow through the speakers in
front of you. It features some of their hits such as "Walk this
Way", "Love in an Elevator", and "Sweet Emotion".
A great mix of different elements to send home fans of two things
happy.
2. Revenge
of the Mummy: The Ride - Universal Studios Florida
A mix of storytelling and
thrill ride mixed perfectly. I remember when the Mummy was being constructed,
I wasn't too sure about this one. I figured they would either focus
too much on the story or too much on the ride. Universal did a fantastic
job of taking the two elements and putting them together. The queue
is amazing and looks completely authentic. The ride definitely doesn't
forget it's origins either by leaving a little tribute to the Monkey
that made that building. The ride has some great effects and a fake
unload station that is one of the more interesting ideas I've ever
seen. Overall, Revenge of the Mummy is a must ride.
1. Kraken
- SeaWorld Orlando
I don't know why this ride
gets overlooked so much. Sure, it's at SeaWorld, but SeaWorld is also
a pretty popular spot. This ride to me, is easily the #1 roller coaster
in all of Orlando. The ride is the first floorless coaster in Orlando.
The Kraken is a mythological sea monster and is a gigantic squid/eel
type creature. The ride is like it's characteristics in two ways,
it lies by the water and it is definitely filled with many twists
and turns. The ride is a classic B&M coaster. Features a gigantic
vertical loop, a great zero-g roll, and an awesome cobra roll. Even
after Kraken hits it's mid course breaks, it still doesn't let up.
It interacts with it's environment perfectly to provide for a great
ride, the best in Orlando.
